about amedia as

Amedia AS originated in 1948 as Norsk Arbeiderpresse, founded through strong political and labour ties to Landsorganisasjonen i Norge (LO) and Det norske Arbeiderparti. Operating as A-pressen for decades, the group built an extensive network of local newspapers before merging with Edda Media in 2012 to establish modern-day Amedia. Now a politically independent, foundation-owned corporation with operations across Norway, Sweden and Denmark, the group has evolved into a major regional news powerhouse, running the biggest number of newspaper titles in Scandinavia and producing the highest number of copies in Norway.

Building on this heritage, Amedia is working on technological, environmental and social leadership among publishers in the Nordic countries. In late December 2025, Amedia Trykk announced the signing of an agreement with Canon EMEA on the acquisition of a high-volume, large-format coloured inkjet web printer. This was made print-ready by the summer of 2026 and shall be used for printing about 40 titles of the Amedia portfolio of about forty of the more than 100 printed news brands she runs in Norway. It’s expected that about 40 per cent of the whole output will be printed on a single digital machine. Fully or partly individualised newspapers shall become fully true in the spring of 2027.

The finishing process is designed to integrate digitally printed and coldset printed pages into one copy. The resulting copies – be they partly or wholly printed on the Canon printer – shall be fully integrated into the door-to-door distribution network. The process in the last mile will have to change completely. The distributor will have to handle and attribute individual copies to individual subscribers. He shall be supported by a mobile app able to read a QR on each copy.

These will probably not realise that they are holding a digital print in their hand. Technicians claim that the typography on digital pages is even clearer than on coldset pages.

The individualisation workflow will draw on the data derived from the approx. 250,000 premium subscribers who read printed as well as digital news. It shall comprise editorial as well as advertising content. The ad sales staff will have to develop novel formats and new pricing schemes as individualisation will rule out mass circulation in favour of targeting.

From about the autumn of 2027 the subscribers will be able to choose their individual areas of interest in the fashion of newsletter profile choices, thus completing the unique process of the one-to-one newspaper in people’s mailboxes and, maybe, saving media people serious material worries in the future.
